There is many ways of creating skin detail, this was my experiment with reprojecting of 3d scan store geo on top of mine.
Comparing to projecting texture xyz you do get entire body coverage which does save you a lot of time painting missing patches that is a big time saver, using zbrush layers and morph targets detail can sculpted dialed in, not so with Texture xyz. Biggest drawback is getting high frequency detail, it takes some time to project details and extract additional maps especially when you are working with udims on your own geo, for head alone you may need to go higher than 30 million polygons.
Both techniques have positives i personally like to stay in zbrush sculptural artistic aspect. For extreme close-ups texturing xyz may be faster and avoid working with a very heavy geo in zbrush.
For close to medium shots with nice specular reflections scan store is a nice alternative, micro detail can always be produced with noise filter in your rendering app of choice.
